Wheat in the Barley dazzled a Gibsons audience with their talent on multiple instruments in a three-hour concert last Saturday evening (Jan. 23) that covered everything from Jewish wedding music to Irish folk songs including an original composition, Can't Draw the Curtain, the title of their latest CD. In Search of Lost Colour, a film about natural dyes around the world, screens tonight (Jan. 29) at 7 p.m. at the Arts Building in Gibsons. Colours of the Earth, a workshop on dyeing with natural dyes, is offered with local fibre artist Natalie Grambow on Saturday Jan. 30. Pre-register through www.arts

This weekend

Artesia Coffeehouse runs tonight (Jan. 29) at the Arts Centre in Sechelt with the music of Anagram and Carnival Era.

Also, the group that will dance for Ice Gate in Rich-mond and at Sechelt’s Torch Relay will give a preview this Sunday, Jan. 31, at Sunnycrest Mall at 1 p.m.

Quilt day

Sunshine Coast Quilters’ Guild Resource Day takes place this Saturday, Jan. 30. Workshops followed by a lecture and trunk show by fabric artist Vivian Kapusta run from 8:45 a.m. to 1 p.m. It’s $5 for drop-in guests, and new members are welcome at the Holy Family Parish Hall at 5700 Nickerson Rd. in Sechelt.

Life drawing

A drawing exhibition entitled 25 Years of Life opens at the Sunshine Coast Arts Centre this Wed-nes-day, Feb. 3, with a reception from 7 to 9 p.m., as a celebration of the 25th anniversary of the Coast’s life drawing group. All are invited.

Music and photos

On Friday, Feb. 5, the Jordao PhotoGraphic Studio Gallery hosts Ross Hastings of Carnival Era and JJ Wagler of Jazz à la Tech for a night of original, accompanied folk music. Future shows

Words and Image, a juried show by the Gibsons Public Art Gallery invites submissions before the Feb. 15 deadline. The show, which opens March 11, is for artists in any medium as long as words are included in the art. As this is a partnership with the Gibsons Public Library, some artworks will be displayed there.

It may seem too early to think about a ceramics show that will take place next June/July but as potter Betty Keller points out, unique ceramic work takes months to design and prepare. Ceramic artists are invited to submit innovative work to the second annual Ceramics on the Edge juried show to be held at the Arts Centre.
