The first harvest from the Sunshine Coast Botanical Garden’s vegetable plot is a bountiful one.

The harvest has already begun at the Sunshine Coast Botanical Garden’s demonstration vegetable garden.

Last week lettuce, broccoli, zucchini and cabbage were harvested and donated to the Sechelt Food Bank. The 5,600 square foot demonstration garden, planted and maintained by volunteers, showcases organic gardening practises. Vegetables from artichokes to zucchini are thriving in soil augmented by a special mix of coffee grounds, seaweed, newspaper, straw and composted horse manure. More than 40 different types of vegetables have been planted, including 15 varieties of tomatoes — many are heirloom plants. The garden is an attractive sight with flowers among the vegetables to attract pollinators and lift the hearts of volunteers and visitors.

Regular work parties in the vegetable garden are held on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays from 2 to 4 p.m. and new volunteers are always welcome. For more information about the vegetable garden project, contact Harry Hill at 604-885-9769.
