Kraft mill fully operational

Quick action by their workers enabled Howe Sound Pulp and Paper (HSPP) to get their kraft mill fully operational three days ahead of schedule.

On Wednesday, June 24, manager, environment and external relations Al Strang said the mill was back up and running after a busy weekend making repairs.

A piece of equipment went down almost four weeks ago, putting 100 workers temporarily out of a job. The replacement equipment had to come from a plant in Montreal, which caused the lengthy delay in getting the mill fully operational.

A bypass measure was put in place on June 5, allowing the mill to start back some of its operation.

“With the bypass, the pulp we are producing is dirtier than normal, but still clean enough for our tissue customers,” Strang said.

The equipment arrived on June 19 and crews worked all weekend to get things fixed.

“The re-installation went really well — a huge thanks to the maintenance crews, who did a superb job,” said Strang. “The manufacturer’s rep, who was on site to oversee things, said that he’s rarely seen such a co-ordinated and hard-working crew. This guy works all over the world, so that’s a real compliment to our guys.”
