Nine young Sunshine Coast classical music students were recognized by the Coast Recital Society (CRS) at the society’s recent annual general meeting.

The scholarships, an important component of the society’s community outreach program, are awarded annually to local students wishing to further their classical music studies.

A new scholarship honouring retiring director Ross Brougham was created this year. A Gibsons’ resident, Brougham served the CRS in several capacities during his long and productive association with the society, including those of treasurer, chair of the scholarship and piano committees and program annotator. The Ross Brougham Scholarship will be given annually to the student receiving the highest grade from the CRS scholarship committee adjudicators.

As two students received the same grade this year, the Ross Brougham Scholarship was awarded jointly to Liam Bonser and Kiel Strang of Roberts Creek. Both students received $500.

Erin MacDonald, a violist from Gibsons pursuing post-secondary music studies, was awarded $400. Two students from Roberts Creek, Annika Bonser and Talia Strang, were awarded $300. Winners of $250 scholarships were Holly Beckmyer of Roberts Creek, Maya Broeke and Esmé McLaughlin Brooks of Gib-sons and Julie Shibasaka of Langdale.

CRS scholarships applications are accepted at the end of February each year and are open to Sunshine Coast students, 25 years or younger, who are studying classical music. More information is available on the CRS website www.coast
