The fine art of Elphi

Visual and performing arts were alive and well at Elphinstone Secondary School during Fine Arts Night June 4.

Students showcased their work through painting, including oils and acrylics, sketching as in numerous pencil portraits by Grace Dieroff, and mixed media such as woodworking and ceramics. Poetry or text was often incorporated into the work using digital programs or silk screening as in
Lili Williams’ poem, You Have to Fight for What You Want or Hannah Kellet’s stylish airbrushed portrait of President Barack Obama with the famous words, Yes We Can.

Icons of the last 50 years abounded, with images of Bob Marley proving the most popular among the high school set. Movie star Marilyn Monroe and author Hunter S. Thompson were also to be seen.

With the support of art teacher Mr. Steeves, student Charlie Daigneault took the opportunity to sell her work at a special display table with the hope the art would provide funds for college.

Textiles were also on display: pillows, shorts, dresses, feather hair ornaments, traditional quilts and a wonderful roomy purse converted from an old leather jacket by Kayla Chambers.

Down the hall the French students served crepes at Café Soleil, while in the gym Acting 11/12 class performed their own production, Dandelion Love.
