Portrait Show

Photographer Tim McLaughlin will show his work at Melriches Coffee House, 1244 Davie St. in Vancouver, with an opening reception on Oct. 6 from 7 to 9 p.m. The exhibition is a show of 12 large format photographic prints, each one mounted on sheet aluminum. The portraits are mostly (but not entirely) artists from the Sunshine Coast. McLaughlin notes that most are taken in outdoor natural light at a studio in Roberts Creek where the artist works during the summer months because he cannot replicate the incredible quality of the light anywhere else. The show runs from Oct. 1 to 31.

Bachinski show

The Gumboot Restaurant hosts artist Una Bachinski for the month of October in her show, The Immaculate Reception: Visions, Dreams and Reflections, with a reception on Friday, Oct. 5, at 7:30 p.m. The artist's parents studied and taught in Ontario and her childhood was influenced by the artistic milieu that surrounded her. After earning a BA with a major in fine and performing arts, Bachinski moved to visual art and created large scale figurative drawings on paper. After a move to Montreal, she explored painting with oils and sketched regularly at the Musée de Beaux Arts. During this time, elements of a more ethereal nature appeared in her work resulting in a landscape of the soul approach. After running her studio on the Coast since 2004, she will now venture to the east this fall.
