Art as a Random Act

Last year when Wendy Crumpler from the Arts Building and Coralie Swaney from The Landing Gallery launched an interesting project, Random Acts of Art, the response was overwhelmingly positive.

Last year when Wendy Crumpler from the Arts Building and Coralie Swaney from The Landing Gallery launched an interesting project, Random Acts of Art, the response was overwhelmingly positive.

Participants from five to 95 embraced theconcept and amazed the public with their creativity. The most often used word was "fun!" How could the organizers not stage a repeat performance?

This year's format will be the same as last year: about 150 packageswill be available at The Landing Gallery in Gibsons, beginning this Friday, Sept.13 at 10 a.m. Each package contains an 8 by 10 matt board and a unique random phrase. Participants can open their package and read their personal phrase at any time between Sept. 13 and the deadline of Oct. 10, preferably on a day that they have time available because they have only 24 hours after opening the package to create theirwork of art - and no cheating. Organizers are asking for a twoonie per package to cover expenses.

Last year the artists created their work from paint, ink, stain, photography, collage, recycled items and fabric, all within the framework of the matt board. They didn't have to be experienced artists - beginners were welcome. Some used their phrase to inspire them; others thought outside the box and only loosely interpreted their phrase in the artwork.

Completed works will be displayed at The Landing Gallery (436 Marine Drive) and the ArtsBuilding (464 South Fletcher) during the Art Crawl that runs from Oct. 18 to 20, with apreview and opening reception taking place from 4 to 7 p.m. on Thursday,Oct. 17. All works will once again be offered for sale.
