The Sunshine Coast chapter of the Canadian Federation of University Women held a bursary fundraiser, “A Girl’s Night Out” on May 4. The over 100 women in attendance had a wonderful time bidding on silent auction items at the urging of MC Doreen Henry. Her mantra, “Buy, buy, buy!” obviously struck a nerve. The fantastic evening included entertainment by The Threshold Singers, an acapella group of women who frequently sing for folks at their end of life, the exquisite voices are led by Jan Alexander. Another musical treat featuring the fantastic duo of Nina Haedrick on flute and Katherine Hume on piano drew a standing ovation from the appreciative audience. Dr. Kris Bulcroft president of Capilano University was the guest speaker; she touched the hearts of many with her humourous and poignant address on women’s friendships. Laughs aplenty was the theme of the evening with a stand-up joke telling contest, won handily by Shirley Hall. She had the crowd in stitches. And just to keep the group on their toes Dorothy Fraser quizzed those present on Canadian trivia, handily won by the group including the guest speaker and Sue Carson, S.C. CFUW president. The proceeds of the stellar evening will go a long way to helping mature women from the Coast continue their education.
